URBN Summer Internship: Week Six & Seven

I know, I know, I didn’t post last week. But honestly, I saved ya’ll some time and reading because there wasn’t much to report on for week six – but I’ll fill you in now.

On July 6th Sara, Nam and I decided to do something other than eat and shop – LOL – and we went on a tour of the Eastern State Penitentiary. I was really surprised by how oddly beautiful I thought it was and by how much I enjoyed it. I’m not much of a history buff but walking down those halls was eerily cool.

Later that day we stopped on South Street, a street known in South Philly for great food and even better thrifting. But before we got to that stuff, we went to what’s called the Magic Gardens. All around South Philly are mosaic walls and doors and art, but in the Magic Gardens it’s a full blown explosion of mosaics. The artist decided he wanted to make South Philly more beautiful and so he and his wife started the mosaics and simply never stopped. I believe they are still even creating more to this day.

The Magic Gardens are absolutely stunning and a must-see for anyone who ever visits Philly. It felt like I was in Greece (I wish) it was so colorful and vibrant!

All during that following week things carried on like normal. I focused on copy for my Intern Project and attempted to get ahead on a few things to make my life easier as the weeks go by.

See? Not too much to share. Sorry, week six was just not the creme de la creme. But oh boy, was week seven.

And that’s because my boy was in town! Eric was in Philly from Thursday night to Monday night and man was it nice to see him. I loved showing him my favorite spots in the city and introducing him to my people here. I didn’t really realize just how much I missed that guy until I saw him.

We packed so many things into the weekend he was here, so I’ll share some highlights.

I took him to Bok Bar, of course, where we had a nice dinner overlooking the city on his first night here. We ate great Mediterranean food and I sipped on a refreshing rosemary cocktail while he drank his whiskey.

We were lucky enough that the Free People photo studio tech intern, Jess,  wanted to get her creative juices flowing and offered up a free couples shoot! We met her at Valley Forge Park where she made some magic happen. It was strange – but so so fun – to be on this side of the camera for a change.

Here are a few sneak peeks she sent:

Eric only had one request while he was here: he wanted to try out the infamous Pat’s and Geno’s Philly Cheesestakes for himself to decide which was truly a better steak. We tried Geno’s on Saturday and Pat’s on Sunday and we came to a final decision. Geno’s takes the cake hands down.

On Monday Eric came to work with me! I showed him around the Navy Yard and my desk and he met my co-workers. He even tagged along to a quick shoot where I had the chance to show him what exactly I do every day. I think it was neat for him to be able to actually see me in action and doing my thing.

While I was sad to see him go I’m glad we only have three more weeks apart left.

Work-wise, week seven was intern project crunch time. Everything had to be shot and executed and finalized before going into next week and even though I’m not exactly sure how I was able to pull that off – I did.

This intern project is so detailed and so time-consuming but I can’t even put into words how excited I am to see the final product and to see the look on everyone’s faces when they see it for the first time.

Tuesday after work I experienced my first Phillies game with a group of other interns. This was also the day I ate my first Shake Shack burger, and wow, it did not disappoint.

Friday night we drove to Devon, PA where one of the few Terrain stores is located. Terrain is a branch of Anthropologie that is solely focused on plants and gardening. You can imagine just how beautiful that store was. It had a cafe attached to it where we ate dinner and popped over to their event space afterword to attend a summer movie event Anthro was putting on.

This up-coming weekend Sara, Sara’s boyfriend Tristen, Natalie, Drew and I are headed to the shore. We have an airbnb right on the water in Brigantine, NJ. I can’t wait to relax and get some rays.

Catch ya next week!
